Student Society President-Elect Removed Following Conservative Activist Posts
The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial online comments about the conservative activist.
The motion against the student leader reached the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the organization.
Disputed Comments
The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on online platforms that appeared to welcome the killing of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in Utah.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The president-elect is also reported to have written in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with results revealed on Tuesday.
Society announcements showed that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The notice stated that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in following the Oxford Union's rules.
Procedural Disputes
Proceedings were informally suspended early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.
In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His statement categorically refuted that any representative appointed by the student had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The student stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.
His comment added that he was "proud and thankful to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Critics have said that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".
External Responses
On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The message criticized the society of becoming a place where "student leaders openly applaud the killing of a ideological rival".
The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and stated that complaints submitted about him had been referred for official review.
The president-elect had been one of multiple members to discuss with Kirk at the society in May.
