Just as the recent storm swept through the northern region the night before, Manchester City blew the visitors aside at the Etihad. It was a statement three-nil victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their title credentials as they consolidated their standing at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Defeats for Manchester United

This scoreline signalled back-to-back WSL setbacks for the United manager's side for the first time since May 2024, placing them seven points off the league leaders with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

United’s ability to juggle league and continental football with a limited squad has been a frequently analyzed issue since they qualified for the Champions League. Reviewing the fixture list, it always seemed this was the period that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Sadly for the visitors, they appeared tired from start to finish, the historic win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Skinner had attempted to rotate the squad with a several adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought freshness, although the omission of the on-form Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in opposition, have no such workload concerns. The City coach made one change from their most recent win over the Toffees with Hemp making her return to the lineup since returning from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

Opening Threats

Goals Galore

They made their pressure count with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was headed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to score. It was City’s 7th headed goal of the term.

They extended their lead with an additional two goals just before the half-time. When Rose was able to advance through the center from defense, the play opened up for City. The key Casparij picked the ball up on the right side before providing a precise driven ball for Shaw to tap home. Shortly later, they had a third after a swift change in the ball saw Hemp afforded the space to strike a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The most obvious substitution came from Skinner at the half-time as Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the game. Former City player Jess Park came most likely to score, hitting the upright, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and were unable to register a solitary shot on target.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have extended their advantage when a excellent Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it mattered little to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any team who placed above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a strong standing after nine matches.
