Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza Leader Steps Down After Pivot Towards Chicken.
The boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the United Kingdom might have reached pizza saturation while broadening the chain into fried chicken has been removed after disagreements with its board.
Leadership Shake-Up
Rennie is exiting after a brief tenure in leadership, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's seeks a new leader.
The outgoing executive, who was with the company for a substantial period, had attempted to shift Britain's largest pizza food delivery firm towards poultry-based products, stating in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the UK's pizza market. He noted poultry was the fastest-growing protein in the globe.
Governance Tensions
Sources suggest that there was friction between Rennie and the board over his strategy and management style, although the company's announcement said he was leaving “through mutual consent”.
Recent Brand Introduction
In September, the chain unveiled its Chick 'N' Dip offering – which the former chief called a “bold new chapter” for the company – and is testing it in 210 outlets in the North West region and the province.
While the business is still going to roll it out across its nearly 1,400 branches in the coming year as intended, it regards chicken products as a supplement for its primary pizza operations.
Board Comment
The Domino's chair, the company chair, said: “Directors think that there are a range of possibilities to boost expansion and profitability in our primary operations. We are prioritizing finding the right chief executive to oversee the systematic rollout of that growth strategy.”
Industry Difficulties
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the British Isles, said transactions declined by 1.5% in the Q3. In August, it alerted that the quick-service industry had “intensified” as it attributed weaker consumer confidence in the lead-up to the budget and rising wage costs for below-target performance and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.
Rival chains are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain revealed the shutting of multiple locations a month ago, after the company behind its outlets faced financial collapse.
Health Initiatives
Adapting to market shifts towards healthier eating, Domino's has introduced lower-calorie items, such as its thin-crust selection of pizzas below 400 kcals as well as meat-free and wheat-free options. A family-sized pepperoni has over 2,300 kcal. A big margherita has 2,171, while a small has 909 calories.
Interim Leadership
Nicola Frampton has been with the company since the recent past, and previously worked for the betting firm William Hill. It is believed that she does not want to occupy the top job permanently.
Frampton stated: “Our team has a number of ongoing expansion and operational projects that we will be focused on carrying out at a rapid rate.”
She said these involved ongoing development on the company's supply chain and new item creation, and its rewards program.
The pizza chain is also lacking a long-term CFO until the spring, when a new appointee joins from the drinks company a well-known firm. For now, Snow serves as interim finance chief.
