European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
