Blast Takes Three Police Officers During Property Removal Procedure in Italy
A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 people got wounded in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.
Event Timeline
The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters went into the property close to the Verona region to execute an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
The three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.
Legal Proceedings
One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and another man who escaped following the blast was located shortly later. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.
The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area showed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the past.
Financial Context
The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the residence was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.
Mediators had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the siblings caused the explosion.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno informed the media.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Impact Assessment
Injured individuals by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
The prosecutor believed the blast had happened on a floor above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he said officers had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.
Local Response
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told local news, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Minister of Defence the Defence Minister joined other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had died in the line of duty.
