Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
