Alphabet to Invest $15bn to Build AI Computing Facility in India
Alphabet, Google's holding company Alphabet Inc. will invest $15bn to establish an artificial intelligence data center in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
The facility, to be established in the port city of Visakhapatnam city, is set to become a part of Google's international system of artificial intelligence hubs spread across twelve different countries.
"It's the largest AI hub that we are going to be investing in across the globe, excluding the United States," Thomas Kurien stated at an conference in the capital city of Delhi recently, noting that the funding will be spread over the next five years.
The announcement comes at a time President Trump of the United States has been urging companies from the United States to focus on local funding.
India's Increasing Significance in AI Computing
The country has become a key destination for AI data centres. The country's affordable data pricing and swiftly increasing internet user base have turned it into a focal point for cloud and AI expansion for tech giants.
"The infrastructure will bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in the nation, speeding up AI innovation and stimulating expansion across the country," commented Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.
Project Details
A definitive arrangement to conclude the project is set to be signed this Tuesday, state authorities said.
"It constitutes a major step forward for our state's digital future, progress, and international reputation," said the technology official Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.
This initiative will merge cloud and AI infrastructure with renewable energy systems and an broader fiber-optic system.
Andhra Pradesh's Data Center Vision
The venture forms part of the Andhra Pradesh government's plan to develop 6GW of data center capability by 2029.
Computing facilities are actual buildings that contain the networking and computing devices that organizations use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.
They feature servers, data storage systems and network equipment like network routers and security firewalls, in addition to the required energy and climate management infrastructure to function properly.
Investment Incentives
Across Andhra Pradesh, the government has been granting reduced-cost property and power to attract worldwide funders.
Industry Growth
The nation's data center sector has grown rapidly in the recent half-decade, crossing the 1GW capacity mark in the year 2024 and almost increasing threefold its 2019 level.
