A Tragic Shift Only 12 Months Has Caused in America

In late October 2024, the situation was entirely separate. Prior to the US presidential election, thoughtful Americans could admit the country's serious imperfections – its inequities and imbalance – however they could still perceive it as America. A democratic nation. A land where legal governance meant something. A state led by a honorable and ethical official, despite his elderly years and growing weakness.

These days, this autumn, countless Americans hardly identify the land we inhabit. Individuals suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are rounded up and pushed into vans, occasionally blocked from fair treatment. The eastern section of the “people’s house” – is undergoing demolition to build a lavish ballroom. The leader is persecuting his opponents or perceived antagonists and requesting federal prosecutors surrender a huge total of public funds. Uniformed troops are deployed into American cities under fabricated reasons. The military command, rebranded the Department of War, has practically liberated itself of routine media oversight during its expenditure of possibly reaching nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Universities, attorney offices, journalism organizations are buckling from leader's menaces, and billionaires are treated like nobility.

“The US, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has crossed the edge into autocracy and fascism,” an American historian, wrote this past summer. “Finally, faster than I imagined possible, it occurred in America.”

One awakes amid recent atrocities. And it's hard to comprehend – and painful to realize – how severely declined our nation is, and the speed at which it unfolded.

Nevertheless, we understand that the leader was legitimately chosen. Despite his deeply disturbing initial presidency and even after the cautions linked to the knowledge of Project 2025 – following the president personally declared plainly he would act as an autocrat just on day one – sufficient voters elected him over the other candidate.

While alarming as the present situation are, it's more daunting to recognize that we have only been nine months into this administration. What will three more years of this decline find us? And if the three years turns into an prolonged era, as there is not anyone to restrain this president from opting that another term is required, perhaps for national security reasons?

Certainly, not everything is hopeless. There will be midterm elections the coming year that could create a new political equilibrium, if Democrats retake either chamber of parliament. There are government representatives who are attempting to exert certain responsibility, such as lawmakers who are initiating an inquiry into the attempted cash appropriation from legal authorities.

And a national vote in the next cycle could initiate the path toward restoration exactly as last year’s election placed us on this disappointing trajectory.

There are numerous residents protesting in public spaces of their cities, as they did recently at democracy demonstrations.

An ex-cabinet member, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of America is awakening”, similar to past following the Red Scare in that decade or during the Vietnam war protests or in the Watergate scandal.

On those occasions, the listing ship finally returned to balance.

He claims he recognizes the signs of that awakening and sees it happening now. As support, he cites the widespread marches, the broad, cross-party resistance regarding a personality's dismissal and the near-unanimous rejection by reporters to agree to military mandates they only publish authorized information.

“The dormant force perpetually exists asleep until specific greed turns extremely harmful, some action so offensive of societal benefit, some brutality so disruptive, that it is compelled but to awaken.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may turn out correct.

In the meantime, the crucial issues remain: can America return to normalcy? Can it reclaim its standing globally and its devotion to legal principles?

Or do we need to admit that the historical project succeeded temporarily, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My negative thoughts indicates that the final scenario is accurate; that everything could be finished. My positive feelings, nevertheless, advises me that we have to attempt, by any means possible.

In my case, as an observer of the press, that involves urging journalists to live up, more fully, to their duty of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it could mean engaging with election efforts, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to safeguard ballot privileges.

Less than a year ago, we were in a separate situation. In the future? Or three years from now? The truth is, we are uncertain. All we can do is to strive to continue fighting.
